What is a herniated disc?

What is a herniated disc? A herniated disc is a serious spine injury. In the human spine, we have vertebral bodies which are these bony bodies with a disc in between that acts as a shock absorber. These discs allow the body to flex and extend and serve a vital function. When the disc is herniated in a wreck or some type of accident, the disc itself will be launched backward into the XA nerve roots. This causes a compression of that nerve that results in pain and radicular symptoms. For example, shooting pain or numbness down the arms or legs. The disc itself can also rip open, which is called an annular tear. And when that happens, there is a spilling of chemicals into and around the surrounding nerve structures. In turn, the chemicals can burn them and cause additional dysfunction and pain. Overall, a herniated disc is very serious and can have lasting consequences. So, if you or a loved one has suffered herniated disc as result of an accident, please come in and meet with me. Together, we will sit down and figure out if you have a case.
