Car Accident Facts and Statistics

While all states see many car accidents on the roads year after year, Florida has some of the worst statistics for these crashes. In each of the most recent years, the Sunshine State has seen approximately 2,400 traffic-related fatalities, making it the third-highest state in the entire country for motor vehicle deaths. In fact, approximately 200,000 car crashes are recorded in Florida every year, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). That equals more than 500 accidents every day.

Sadly, these are just a few of the most startling Florida car accident statistics. There are many more injuries that occur every day on Florida’s roads. It’s important for accident victims to understand that when they are in a crash that was the fault of someone else, they may be entitled to compensation for the damages they suffer.

Florida Car Accident Statistics

No one thinks they’re going to get into a crash when they head out on Florida’s roads. Unfortunately, it’s an extremely common occurrence throughout the state. According to the FLHSMV, in 2018 alone, there were:

  • 401,851 traffic accidents
  • 3,150 fatalities resulting from traffic accidents
  • 254,484 injuries suffered in traffic crashes
  • 2,935 crashes that resulted in fatalities
  • 166,628 accidents that caused injuries
  • 6,568 auto accidents that involved bicyclists
  • 148 bicyclist fatalities resulting from those crashes
  • 8,706 motorcycle accidents
  • 497 motorcycle fatalities
  • 9,307 total pedestrian accidents
  • 699 pedestrian fatalities

With statistics like these, it’s not difficult to see that the number of traffic accidents in Florida is very high. Too many Floridians are being injured or killed in crashes year after year, and worse, many of these accidents could have been prevented.

Hernando County Car Accident Statistics

Unfortunately, Hernando County sees its fair share of auto accidents. In 2018, FLHSMV reported that the county had:

  • 2,472 motor vehicle crashes
  • 2,326 people injured in auto accidents
  • 32 people killed in crashes
  • 111 motorcycle crashes
  • 29 bicycle crashes
  • 56 crashes involving pedestrians

Dangerous Roads and Intersections in Hernando County

Although the number of traffic accidents and fatalities may not be as high in Hernando County as they are in other parts of the state, this area still has some extremely dangerous intersections and roads. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, in 2010, the most dangerous roads in the county were:

  • Interstate 75, near State Road 50, was the most dangerous section of road for that year, with 154 accidents, 44 injuries, and two fatalities.
  • Mariner Boulevard and County Line Road were second on the list, although this area had only half of the crashes of Interstate 75.
  • State Road 50 consistently remains as the most dangerous road in Hernando County. This roadway had three of the four most crash-heavy intersections in 2009.
  • Mariner is also an extremely dangerous county road. It is cited as having three of the five worst intersections.
  • Lastly, due to the fact that U.S. 98 and Citrus Way has been dubbed, “the infamous intersection,” officials are planning a roundabout to stem the flow of traffic deaths.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians should all be extremely careful when traveling on these roads in order to reduce the number of accidents and deaths.

Common Causes of Car Accidents in Florida

Given the many causes of car accidents in Florida, it is not surprising that there are so many car crashes around the state every year. While every car accident is different, with its own set of unique circumstances, there are some causes that are more common than others. These include:

  • Distracted driving: When many people think of distracted driving, they think only of texting and driving. However, there are many distractions that can cause trouble for a driver. Among them are eating, grooming, rowdy passengers, and loud music.
  • Aggressive driving: When motorists drive aggressively, it causes dangerous problems for those on the road around them. Cutting people off, erratic lane changes, and following too closely are all examples of aggressive driving.
  • Driving under the influence: When a person drives under the influence, their reaction time is slowed, their perception is distorted, and they simply cannot make reasonable decisions. Driving while impaired does not only include drinking and driving, but also driving under the influence of drugs.
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving: When a person is extremely fatigued while driving, they experience many of the same problems as someone under the influence. They cannot react as quickly, and they often are not able to stay focused on the road.
  • Speeding: Speeding isn’t only one of the main causes of car accidents in Florida, it also contributes to the severity of them. When excessive speed is involved in a car crash, the force causes great damage and severe injuries.
  • Ignoring traffic signs and signals: Traffic signs and signals are there for a reason. They help control the flow of traffic and alert drivers to where they need to go and what they need to do. Ignoring these traffic signs and signals is extremely dangerous and can easily cause an accident.

Unfortunately, these are just some of the most common causes of car accidents in Florida. There are many other types of negligent behavior that can lead to serious motor vehicle crashes. Drivers should always refrain from engaging in these behaviors to keep themselves and others safe on the road.
